Kia Niro Hybrid Goes Green

Well not exactly the green model from previous renders, but Kia did bring along a blue Niro Hybrid to be put on display at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show.

We already know that the Niro hybrid will be running 1.6-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine called the “Kappa” with a 32 kW electric motor. We’ve just never seen it under the hood of the Niro until now. That nicely package engine will offer you cleaner combustion, improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions thanks to its cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and a long stroke specification which maximises thermal efficiency.

Pictures of the hybrid’s interior was also made available today thanks to AutoEvolution. When the ordering books are open you should be able to choose from two interior accent options, glossy white or black. Not prominent in the picture is the increased density of the seat padding for added comfort.

It comes with a sizeable trunk and what seems to be a retractable trunk cover. On the left of the trunk is an extra speaker and the right looks to have a removable panel. Could be a lockable storage space of some kind.

The optimal amount of rear seat passengers is two but there is just enough space for three in the Niro. If nobody is sitting in the middle, passengers will be able to lower the center arm rest which comes equipped with cup holders.

If you’re visiting the Geneva Motor Show, you can drop by the Kia booth to take a closer look yourself.

Those headrests look like it may block the rear view since they're situated pretty high up and the roof line kinda slopes downwards. Pair that with the extra wing at the top of the rear window and you have drastically reduced visibility.

It is quite probable that there is a rear view camera that will give you an unobstructed view of what's behind the vehicle so that doesn't really matter that much.

I've only see the in the new Chevy Bolt. Does Kia have permission to use the tech in their vehicles?

Chances are if Kia really wants the tech they can get it or create it themselves and if it has a patent i'm sure they can get around that by changing up a few things so they don't violate anything.

The increased density of the seat padding would make long drives so much more comfortable but does that mean the Kia Niro won't come with heated seats since that's more padding it was to heat through?

Shouldn't be a problem for heat to make it through, they would have to compensate for it and the worst case scenario is it might take longer to heat up. Either way it will work.

It doesn't really seem like the most complicated thing to put a camera in the back and attach it to a screen in the front.
