Should I wait for a 2018?

I am so happy to have discovered the Kia Niro! Looking for a replacement for my 2004 Pontiac Vibe and this is the closest thing yet. My priorities are fuel economy, storage space and low price and reliability. Also I am tall, so love that the car sits a bit higher. I have looked at the Honda Fit, the Lexus CT 200h and the Prius. None of them had everything that I want. Because price is important to me, I would go for the FE, but do I need to get an LX for the roof rails so that I can put a rack on it? I need to be able to carry a kayak.
Also should I order/wait for a 2018? There are only a handful of them at dealers in my area (Boston) now.

Thanks!

The FE specifically does not have roof rails, to reduce wind resistance (and cost). It's not a good trade off, since the LX is only $ 310 more than the FE. The push button start and door button locks are worth more than that alone. The cross bars by them self are nearly $300 as it is. By the time you first find the roof rails and add the cross bars, you could have just started with the LX and be done with it.

I am thinking wait for the 18 Plug in if you do 90% city, less than 45 mph driving and can fit your commute to and return in the EV range. (25 to 30 miles reported)

If you do more than 45 mph commuting, just get the standard Hybrid.

They have no mention of the Plug-In EV range though.

There is no difference in 18 over 17 except for the Touring Graphite edition.

You will get a better deal on a 17 if they still have them on the lot.

plug-in model available?

Not sure I want the latest gizmos as I test drove a 2018 Honda Fit and the blind spot camera makes me nauseous to glance at it. Also I am kind of against any automatic driving features. Just seem like they could malfunction or that there would be a situation where I wanted to do the thing that the controls considered unsafe? But I am considering waiting for a plug-in. Can you order one yet? They aren't listed on the government page for tax credit. (which the forum won't let me post as I don't have enough posts.) Thanks for the feedback.

There nothing new. Unless you are interested in the Touring Graphite trim. Which is a Touring Lite, ie it does not have the tech package, just the slightly bigger screen and subwoofer.

the 2018 touring has lane keep assist thats new. I've read it might not be the best LKA when compared to the new honda crv or a tesla but it will keep me inside the lines.

Depends if you want the few new features in the 2018 model or a great deal on an older 2017 Niro. Maybe I sound biased, but boxing day is approaching and I assume dealerships would want to get rid of their older models.

I got my '18 Niro EX [without any packages] last Wednesday. The Blind side warning [includes backup warning]; Auto dimming rear view mirror; when backing up the sound volume is reduced & there is a backup beeping sound I believe are all new [included to the standard EX] to the '18.

The 17 EX (even with no package, according to the brochure I have) always had blind spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert. The backup beep as well, and Im not 100% sure about the reduced volume but probably.

The auto dimming mirror is indeed not on my 17 though.
