when it鈥檚 chilly i鈥檝e been starting off in hev or sport thinking higher engine revs than ev will bring the heat up faster. is this worthwhile or am i just wasting gas?

Probably wasting a little bit. But if it's cold, the ICE starts even in EV mode. It only runs at a fast idle, enough to generate some heat for the cabin. I generally saw MPG in the 150 range while just getting some heat from it. Unless you have a need to save some battery power for using EV mode later in the drive, the cars handle the control pretty well on their own.

When I know I will be heating, I also start out in HEV mode. As long as I will be running the engine anyway, might as well get some propulsion out of it. Seems more efficient to me.
