annoying "Service due" message in dashboard after only 2099 miles driven !!! - RESOLVED

Since three days when starting the car there is a new "service message" as per picture below popping up for a couple of seconds.

Sky Gadget Communication Device Font Mobile device

Problem is.. the car should not even be close to service due date as per

  • KIA's maintanance schedule
  • the vehicles own maintenance app on large screen
  • KIA connect app

...neither by mileage driven nor by elapsed time.

Car was bought 2/23

As per Kia 1st service is due after max. 12 month or 8,000 miles... putting the 1st service at 2/24 / 8,000 miles; which ever of milestones is reached first.

new dashboard message would suggest the first service to be due after 3000 miles. I have driven 2099 miles and the pop-up advises maintanance to be performed in 911 miles = 3,000 miles total. The left 59 days would be close to 6 month in service...

and as per car's onboard maintanace app the service is due in 5901 miles putting the first service at the correct 8,000 miles and Feb 2024 (12 month)

(yes... the picture did reveal the need to clean the screen :) )

same correct date / mileage reflected in Kia Connect app

Where is the incorrect dashboard message coming from and how do i get rid of it 😱

You can go into settings and change both the miles and months before the next maintenance reminder.
My Kia dealer set that 1st maintenance reminder for well before the manual says it should happen - common dealer "trick"
Try a "reset" in the maintenance reminder and see if the light goes out. It is possible that something else triggered that symbol but it should not occur that soon.
Maybe take it back to the dealer and ask, "what is going on here?"

Was looking all over the place in on board computer to reset this reminder and could not find anything... Called Kia of America to assist and gave them my friendly comments about dealerships manipulating the service intervals to fill their own pockets... Does not help KIA to come across as a grown up reputable brand if they allow their dealerships to be too creative.

For anybody having a new KIA encountering the same dealer scam here's the fix.

1. tap "vehicle"

Output device Gadget Television set Communication Device Font

2. on left hand side scroll down to "convenience" (in my case "inconvenience")

3.) suggest you set the service interval to the KIA recommended settings as per car manual (Niro HEV 2023 8.000 miles / 12month... already changed below) or whatever you prefer

... and you are now free'd from the annoyance of service messages to pop up when YOUR DEALER wants to see you open your wallet to a plausible date when YOU feel the need the car needs attention...

Cheers !!!

@D-W-S Hurray!! Good for you! Thanks, as I'm sure most of us will have this problem sooner or later.

Nice clear pictures & directions. Unfortunately, on my 2020, the only option under "Convenience" is "Climate". Also, searching for either "Oil Change" or "Service Interval" finds nothing.

You did not tell us which year/model you have but apparently it is different from mine. (Note my "signature" that tells this plus my location.)
Update: strangely, my "signature" is not visible on this post. I checked my settings and it shows there.
I am driving a Niro 2023 HEV...

I thought there was no need to specify as I posted this in the section "2023+ Niro HEV"

Yup. I bought a 23 PHEV in January and had to change/update that service interval reminder in March. Then, just last week I had to reset my engine oil service message because it was at 1%. The car has 3500 miles on it. You’d think someone at the factory or dealer would have set this up as “new”. 🤷‍♂️

Someone at the dealer set it up as "come in as early and often as possible, for the profit".
This thread made me change mine from "come in every other month or so, after every tenth tank of gas" to what the manual actually recommends.

I reset the maintenance minder on my 2023 Niro yesterday at ~4,500 miles, but the Kia Connect app claims my next service will be at 40,000 miles, with 35,418 miles and 1,687 days left. Marking maintenance as complete in the Kia Connect app just adds more 8,000 miles and days until the next service interval.... After some experimentation, I figured out how to mark future maintenance milestones as incomplete, and to set the next service interval at 8,000 miles, but not how to change the date.

I keep wondering what Kia can do to persuade me to renew this POS app.
but not how to change the date.
Mine matches my purchase date

Perhaps Kia's logic is 8,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.

Ok I went back and checked the maintenance in my app. I know it was correct in April (right after I bought the car and after I had set up service interval in the car as the dealer didn’t do it) but now it was showing 16k mile/2025 as next service because on ‘May 7th the 8k mile service was set as completed in the car…. ‘

Strange as I didn’t do this or know how to even, but May 7th was the date I upgraded the nav software - so bug, or I fat fingered something.

Anyway, I edited the 8k completed service in the app maintenance history to mark it incomplete and it looks ok again (6k miles / 300 days to go before my first service).

I noticed every time I run a software update (so far I think I updated the NAV 3 times) for whatever reason it marks the next service complete.

If you manually update the software through a USB stick check right after the update if the app helped itself to erroneously mark service complete.

One would need to manually mark the service as "incomplete" to restore the status prior to the update...

Thanks. That's as good an explanation as I have seen.
While I’ve only run an update once, via USB, I recall having to reset my service reminder shortly after that too. I’ll definitely keep an eye on that the next time I run an update. I’m waiting to see if/how an OTA update works.

Followed D-W-S advice and got my maintenance interval set correctly on the car's screen. But I see on my Kia Access app it is not changed even though it says it has taken the information from the vehicle. What do you suggest I do to get the Kia Access information to match the car? Thanks.

I'm curious. What did you do the make the future maintenance milestones as incomplete and to see the next service interval at 8,000 miles, but not change the date?

If I remember correctly... in the Kia Access app there are 2 tabs... on the LEFT is "Maintenance" .. on the right is "History"
I think I had to go to the "History" tab and from there I was able to mark service "incomplete"..

As I do not have any service in the history any longer I can't post screen shots.. but can do so after next update if Kia has not fixed this software glitch by then... (doubtful they do)

on another note... so glad the car is capable of over-the-air updates ... not a single OTA update took place ... all so far I had to do manually...

Yeah, from what I’ve read and heard from friends who own other brands, Tesla is the only one that has this down. While I’m not a fan of the ownership, the technology in those cars seems years ahead of anyone else.

I have a coworker who has been in their FSD beta program for a few years now and he says it’s incredible. I really like the LFA and adaptive CC on my Niro, but having a car just about drive itself from point A to B is a whole different game.

It is kind of sad to think about how Kia’s app, connect/uvo/access software, and OTA updates are mediocre, at best. They have a long way to go and owners are quickly coming to expect that kind of tech in their cars. ESPECIALLY when we’re required to pay subscription fees for most of it.
