Back up camera issues

In the US a functional backup camera (that was original equipment on the vehicle) is considered a required safety item, and a recall can be forced on the company if it appears to be a widespread problem. For issues like this that don't reach that threshold, dealers will usually be able to get the manufacturer to fix the item because they don't want the issue to rise to the national level.

Just picked up a 2022 Kia Niro EV from Carvana. Backup camara does not work at all! How can this not be fixed or disclosed prior to sale??? I'm taking it to the dealer for diagnosis.
The NHTSA considered a back-up camera (if the car has one) as a critical safety feature, and will issue a recall if they receive multiple reports of failures. The Niro doesn't have a history of this, so I doubt a single report would make a difference. But since it is considered critical the seller should have either repaired this before selling, or disclosed it before the sale. The good thing is that the Kia warranty is still available to the second owner. The 10 year warranty is reduced to five since you did not buy it as a certified pre-owned from a Kia dealer, but I believe the camera should still be a covered item. If Carvana doesn't give you any satisfaction, they check with a Kia dealer, making sure they know you are not the original owner.
