Check Hybrid System - 2019 Niro PHEV 63,500 miles

Last Saturday I began receiving a Check Hybrid System fault (telling me to pull over and shut the vehicle off) on my Vehicle accompanied by an HEV fault on the dash and an orange check engine light.

The Warning message would come on every time the electric range would run out and the gas engine fired up.

I had previously been getting an intermittent orange check engine light - Code P0140 - O2 Sensor No Activity Detected Bank 1 Sensor 2.

So I ordered and replaced the downstream O2 Sensor Part No. 39210-03140 that I ordered over the internet for the cost of $100.85.

It fixed the intermittent P0140 fault and also the accompanying Check Hybrid System Fault Display.

The Dealer would have probably replaced under warranty but is 30 miles one way from my home - I would have had to leave the car for all day - so my wife would have had to follow me there and take me home and then make a return trip. They would have also had to been able to reproduce the fault and their closest open appointment is 2 months away.

All things considered easier to order the part and do the job myself in the comfort of my garage.

I am going to contact KIA Customer Service and see if they will reimburse me for the part cost as it was a warranty repair - the car couldn't be reliable driven long distances as it was and it would be 2 months before KIA Service at our Dealer could help me.
I am sure they will tell me to take a long walk off a short pier, but I am going to try anyway.

We have a great Dealership but with how popular KIA's are right now - the only Dealership within 100 miles - they are just overwhelmed through no fault of their own.
There really should be some type of remedy for the customer in these type situations where the only convenient Dealer is so overwhelmed it takes months to get an appointment.

Love KIA, Love our Dealership - they do a great job - they are just overwhelmed.

Updated: A KIA Customer Service Specialist did call me back and told me the part -Oxygen Sensor 39210-01340 is covered for a period of 5 years or 60,000 miles - so warranty was expired for this part. I did appreciate the Representatives calling me back, they were courteous and professional - I appreciated them calling me up and having a conversation with me about my concern.

This just happened to me with my 2017 Niro FE. The difference being that my Hybrid battery was not charging correctly during normal driving, and not at all when I tried to use Cruise Control. The master tech at my local Kia dealership troubleshot, and after 4 days ended up having to seek out the help of Kia Engineering in order to confirm what was causing the issue. Turned out the engine computer was faulty. Luckily, it's still (just barely) covered under the Federal Emissions Warranty. The dealership has been really great, considering I didn't purchase the car from them. They're even covering my rental car!

KIA sure has great Warranties.

After reading your post I noticed that the Engine Computer Module is covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles under the Federal Emissions Warranty - outstanding coverage for that component - probably saved you considerable money.

My O2 Sensor is listed for 5 years or 60,000 miles under the Federal Emissions Warranty so at 5 years and 64,000 I'm out of the warranty window.

I noticed that some of the HYBRID specific components under the Federal Emissions Warranty are actually covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles.

Here is a picture of it. The plug is marked up as I did some ohm checks and testing of the sensor. I couldn't confirm exactly what failed but the initial problem was an intermittent no activity fault that would happen infrequently that eventually became a fault that wouldn't clear. I think the sensing element just failed - it did not seem that dirty to me.

The car would reset when you turned it off and then run briefly until the fault again would occur.
Luckily I was around our home when this happened.

I already had the Oxygen Sensor at home as I had ordered it about a month ago when I was getting an intermittent fault.
The fault was P0140 O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected Bank 1 Sensor 2 (this is the downstream O2 Sensor after the cat - a real pain in the a_ _ to get to if you aren't using a lift).

Here is a picture of the faulty O2 sensor. It checks fine when I do an electrical check on the heater element but seems to have a problem with the sensor portion. After replacing the sensor I took a 250 mile trip on Wednesday and had no problems so I know the new sensor fixed the problem - before I was getting the Hybrid System Fault and engine light every time the gas engine started. You can see carbon build up on the Sensor.

HI,
I started a discussion here yesterday with basically the same subject heading. Prior to posting, I read this and a couple other related threads, but I thought my situation was a bit different, so started a new post.
https://www.kianiroforum.com/thread...ds/hybrid-system-warning-shut-engine-off-check-regenerative-brake-system.12889/

But in trying to anticipate some outcomes, and in re-reading this, I have a couple questions:
1) You say you got a Code reading. Was this right on your dash board? I have only ever gotten icons showing, not actual numeric codes. Is it possible to get your own scanner?!
2) Prior to the actual shut down of my car, I had gotten a few intermittent check engine warnings over the last few weeks. But what I noticed alongside the warning was a slowing down and reduction in energy of the car. It felt like it was "having trouble breathing" for lack of a better description. I had been wondering if there was a plug or some issue somewhere along in the exhaust system.
When your O2 sensor went, was your car experiencing any actual driving problems? Were there physical symptoms along with the warning lights?

1. I received a check engine light only. I took it to our local Auto Zone Part Store and they hooked up their diagnostic tool to my car and read the code. They then printed out a sheet showing me the code number and Description of what that code represented - and the suggested part to fix it. My code was P0140 - O2 Sensor No Activity Detected Bank 1 Sensor 2.
It is possible to get your own scanner but the Part Store in our town offers a code read service at no charge and are generally happy to do it for you.

2. When I got the code it was accompanied by a message that said Check Hybrid System Pull over and shut Car Off. I live in a small town and was near home so I wasn't going very fast and didn't have far to drive.
I did notice in my situation the engine would not run with the faults/message displayed and the Hybrid Battery charge was dropping very low ( hence the message to pull over and shut the car down). My impression was the cars performance would have mirrored yours if I tried to drive fast or go any distance.

If your problem is similar to mine the new downstream 02 Kia Oxygen sensor cost around $100 and a Skilled Technician with a lift could replace that part in around 15 minutes.

I posted my experience to help others and if you have any more questions I would be happy to answer them.

When the problem happened to me I feared it was a big deal but after it was all said and done it was a simple repair - what complicates things is the car won't run if the engine doesn't run and the Hybrid battery is low - so it is something that must be fixed for reliable operation of the vehicle.

Please let me know about how your situation works out - hope the best for you!

My 2023 HEV had a similar (but possibly not the same) error message early in its life. I had it towed to a KIA dealer. They tightened the ground cable connections. Nothing like this has happened again in the past ~20,000 miles.

Ah, ok.
The garage where the car is now did run diagnostics, but they did not tell me what codes they were seeing. It was the end of their day.
I'll get more information tomorrow, of course.
Thanks for these details. I am definitely hoping it is a straight forward fix. The shut off engine warning is rather terrifying.
