Hi All,
Our new (under 1000 miles) 2019 Niro PHEV is wonderful in every respect, but we've started to notice the engine starting up frequently despite having an ample charge. Shutting the car off and starting again sometimes clears this, but its a persistent issue. Does anybody have any experience with this happening? Could it be something we don't know?
Thanks!
Dave

I also have a PHEV. The PHEV uses the engine coolant to supply heat to the cabin. In cold weather the Niro PHEV starts the engine to raise the coolant temperature to supply the needed heat for the passengers. Therefore the engine will start and stop to keep the coolant temperature hot enough to supply heat. For example if you start up the PHEV in the morning with 26 EV miles available and it is 45 degrees outside and your cabin set point is 75 degrees the engine will start to heat up the coolant to be able to reach the cabin set point.

Agree with previous poster. If your ICE is coming on despite a full battery, either A) You pushed the accelerator into the gray POWER section on the instrument cluster (which kicks the ICE on momentarily), or B) You shifted into SPORT mode via bumping the shifter to the left (which will run the ICE almost constantly presumably to charge the battery), or C) Your A/C is set above the ambient temp thus you are requesting heat and the ICE kicks on periodically to provide you with cabin heat.

I have just the HEV, but same engine. It will come on often when starting when the outdoor temp gets lower, maybe <70F..? In the summer this never happens. As it gets colder it will always turn the ICE on when starting.
