The 2018 Kia Niro (at least Touring Models) have made history by becoming the 1st Vehicle Ever to be given the IIHS "Top Safety Pick + Award"

I've recently purchased this configuration so I'm happy to discover it is such a safe vehicle. We test drove it in the country at night because our daughter lives in an area with huge deer populations and I can confirm that the HID headlights are pretty amazing.

This forum will NOT allow me to post links so just look up IIHS Top Safety Pick +. The most comprehensive article I've seen about this is by the New York Daily News.

First for the Niro, not first vehicle ever. And only because this rating wasn't available last year for the identical car. Any Niro with HID headlights would have the same rating.
I stand corrected. Thanks. The title of the New York Times article was somewhat misleading in their placement of the words "first ever".

While any Niro with HID headlights would get the "good rating" for headlights, I thought the Active Safety Features available in the Tech Package were also required to earn the Top Safety Pick + Award.

In Canada, that Tech Package comes as a standard feature on Touring Models.

Although the Kia Niro was designed to be a "World Car", there are some differences in configuration from country to country. My Niro has Chrome Door Handles and a Space Saver Spare Tire as opposed to a Tire Inflation Kit.

Well that is certainly true, unless the only way to get HID is on cars with the tech package.

Not the New York Times. Marketing outlets like the NY Daily News are expected to be misleading and poorly composed.
