May 10, 2018 — Kia is recalling more than 27,000 Niro hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) at risk of fires caused by leaking oil from the hydraulic clutch actuators.

Kia says the oil can accumulate in the cap area and cause an electrical short, leading to an increased risk of fire.

Engineers determined burrs in the clutch actuators are what damages the oil seals and allows the oil to leak. The only warning a driver would see is an illuminated HEV warning light.

The recalled Niro SUVs were built from November 1, 2016, to September 11, 2017.

The 2017 Kia Niro recall is expected to begin June 15, 2018. Dealers will inspect the hydraulic clutch actuator phase caps for leaking oil and contamination and replace the actuator assemblies if needed.

Kia dealers will install new phase caps and sealant if no leaking oil is present.

Owners may contact Kia customer service at 800-333-4542 and refer to recall number SC163.

Sounds like it's affecting Ioniq hybrids as well, so it could be a problem with all their hybrids. A bit concerning since the problem has been making its way into the Niro since 2016. At least there hasn't been any fires, crashes, or injuries related to the problem so far.

Details of the Hyundai and Kia Hybrid Recall

According to Consumer Reports, the recalls affect 27,029 2017 Hyundai Niro hybrids and 10,156 2017 Ioniq hybrids.
Recall documents suggest a manufacturing defect could cause oil leaks which in turn could cause an electrical short.

Neither Kia nor Hyundai were aware of crashes or injuries related to the defect.
The recall is expected to begin June 15, 2018. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 800-333-4542.

This does not appear to affect the 2018 Niros at this time!

Received mail notice from KIA about June 26.
Took to Dealer in Carlsbad CA. Service Writer said they ran out of parts as they had been swamped. Expected more parts and scheduled me for Monday (Tomorrow).

Mean while they did first service, installed new Battery Mannagement Software, updated Brake Control Module software, secured front wiring harness with new kit.

I have a 2018 Kia Niro Touring. Kia just replaced my clutch actuator. Symptoms were that it was squealing when started and occasionally when sitting still idling. It sounded like a power steering pump going out or a squealing belt. No mention in the repair description that it was leaking. Kia dealership would not let me drive it home because it could have been a safety issue. The gave me a rental. Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone who might be experiencing this problem.
