Hi, I have a 2019 niro phev, and i use a level 1 charger at home all the time. Is it safe and efficient to leave it plugged into my outlet all the time? I have been unplugging it when not using it because Im not sure if it continues to draw power when its in the outlet but not joined to the car. Sprry if its dumb question dont know much about eletricals, thanks

when it's finished charging it will turn itself off. You can leave it plugged in.

Yea thats what I do i set a depature time for before i go to work.

I just had the charging adapter mounted on my wall and wanted to know if i can just leave it plugged into the wall all the time, if it safe/efficient.

It's certainly safe to leave it plugged in even when not charging the car. It does draw a little power to run the display and the circuitry to sense when it's connected to the car but I would suspect that's pretty minimal. I leave mine plugged in at home all the time for what it's worth.

Hello Michael,
I am in the same configuration, I am using the Home Charger as everyday charger.
Two weeks ago, I bought a power meter to plug on the outlet in front of the charger because I want to measure the electrical cost usage of my Niro to add to gas cost (for monthly budget ;) ).
So, I can tell you that in the morning when charge is done, the outlet power meter shows a 0A drained (I'm assuming that the display on the charger is drawing some milliamps ..).

One thing I did is that I changed (in the car's console, in PHEV menu) the power drained on 110V to "Reduce".
Doing that, I decreased the current in my plug from 12A to 8A, and I prefer that for safety reason, I do not like to drain high current for prolonged time in my garage!
Decreasing to 8A add 2-3 hours more in charging time, but for overnight charging you have time.

I will do a test next time with configuration on "Minimum" to see the current drained on this config.

That's a really good idea, what type of monitor did you get?
I've checked on my charger a few times I haven't noticed any sort of heat coming from it, But that's also an interesting idea turning it down I'll think on that.

So I did the test in 'Minimum' mode and the result is 4.5A (which gives a ~0.5kWh charging).
Knowing that:
- battery range (on the 80% battery for EV) is 24 miles
- battery is 8.9kWh
- EV uses only 80% of the battery (20% used for Hybrid as observed when charging the car)
- estimated efficiency of 110V charger ~75% (level 2 charger seems more efficient).

For a normal daily commute ~15 miles :
time of charging at reduced speed = (8.9*0.8 * (15/24)) / (0.5 * 0.75) = 11.8 hours
That is is enough for me knowing that the car stays in the garage all night (>= 12 hours) during the week.

As a synthesis if I include all charging rates and 15 miles day or full 24 miles day:

Maximum charging (12A ~ 1.4kWh) / 15 miles : (8.9*0.8 * (15/24)) / (1.4 * 0.75) = 4.24 hours
Maximum charging (12A ~ 1.4kWh) / 24 miles : (8.9*0.8 * (24/24)) / (1.4 * 0.75) = 6.78 hours

Reduced charging (8A ~ 0.9kWh) / 15 miles : (8.9*0.8 * (15/24)) / (0.9 * 0.75) = 6.6 hours
Reduced charging (8A ~ 0.9kWh) / 24 miles : (8.9*0.8 * (24/24)) / (0.9 * 0.75) = 10.55 hours

Minimum charging (4.5A ~ 0.5kWh) / 15 miles : (8.9*0.8 * (15/24)) / (0.5 * 0.75) = 11.87 hours
Minimum charging (4.5A ~ 0.5kWh) / 24 miles : (8.9*0.8 * (24/24)) / (0.5 * 0.75) = 19 hours

These are estimated charging time, but seems very close to reality.
From that, you can adjust your charging rate to stay in the safest zone (lowest current) using your 110V home charger according to your timeframe.

I uploaded a photo of my power-meter that shows you 1) the amps used and 2) the cumulated $ spent (yes it is euro sign, but you configure the rate you wish).
You can also see in the bottom part of the display the last 7 days history and the fact that day-4 (weekend) I charged 8kWh which was the full battery ;)

PS: Having a 10-30 plug for dryer that I do not use in my garage and knowing that 240V chargers are more efficient, I'm thinking switching to a level 2 charger : Zencar level 2 (240V-16A with NEMA 10-30 plug).

That is crazy the amount of effort you posted here, thank you. I will definitely use the reduced charge knowing this now.

Thanks again too for the photo, I will be buying one of those shortly!

Unfortunately I cannot afford a 240V charger yet, and my government ran out of funding incentives this year lol (they were all used up) So will have to wait if they will bring out more down the road. lol
