Hello all, just over 2 weeks ago, I purchased a beautiful black Niro. With just over 1,000 miles, I'm loving it so far!

I want to give this girl some attitude while maintaining family functionality and amazing MPG. I took my Corolla and made it a super fun, aggressive car, but in the process, took a bunch of practicality out of it, being lowered 6 1/2". Any of you plan on modding this thing? I've already done a few minor things, interested to see what you guys have done/plan to do.

The most modding I intend on doing is installing a seat cover for the pups and a cloth steering wheel cover for the summer. Maybe a couple of magnet bumper stickers...? Otherwise, I love my car as is. :)

Any mods will be aerodynamic for me. Removing the roof racks if I don't buy the FE, and removing passenger side mirror. Everything else will be rather minor tweaks (but they can add up). If I discover that 15" wheels are more fuel efficient than the 16" stock wheels, I might spring for those. The 15" wheels on the Ioniq are certainly efficient.

Never use it although I've tried. The amount of time to focus on a passenger side mirror seems dangerous to me, especially in heavy interstate traffic where quick lane changes are required. A quick turn of the head has been more than sufficient in most cars I've owned. There is a trend towards ever poorer rearward view with blind spots on the larger rear pillars. Cameras will eventually compensate for that (and remove all need for external mirrors).

My current car is a PT Cruiser, purchased new end of 2001, which does not have a great rear view, but better than many current new cars. New, it had a bit of a funny car jacked up rear end. I modified the rear springs to drop the rear end two inches. Not only did that have the desired aerodynamic effect by removing a full two inches of drag area, but it also improved my rear view immensely as an extra benefit. Then I removed the passenger side mirror putting a matching piece of black vinyl in its place. I compensated for it by putting a larger inside mirror. It gave me a full view of all passenger side windows and the rear window, virtually eliminating the blind spot. Never had a close call of any kind.

So the PT Cruiser does not have great fuel efficiency stock. In 2001, EPA ranked it as 21/26 manual transmission. Besides the two aero mods above, I took out all the removable floor mats that came with it (amazing how much they weigh), and the rear seats. After 180,000 miles, my overall mpg is 28 mpg, with lots of cross country trips at 70 plus (not many local trips - bicycle instead). Not bad compared to many cars, but by far the worst of any car I've owned after 1975. So I'm looking to replace it and the Niro looks pretty darned good for me.

I've never bothered removing one of the two rear mirrors on my motorcycle although having two on a motorcycle is completely superfluous as visibility is much better than any car. A ten degree rotation of the head gives you a clear view of the blind spot - I only use the mirror to watch rear traffic (habit from driving 75 during the 55 years looking for traffic cops). Aerodynamics suck on motorcycles but that is a feeble excuse. I should remove one of the mirrors as I'd probably notice the gain. Never thought about it until you posed the question. I bought the bike a few years ago to save money on local trips. Not sure it really saves money, but it does get 68 mpg over the 13,000 miles of ownership. Saves time too as it is easy to pass slow movers on two lanes (hugely overgeared for fuel efficiency and I sometimes have to drop three gears when passing). A Honda NC700X if anyone is interested. No other "big" bike gets anywhere near that. One guy on Fuelly has a lifetime average of 76 mpg! But I ride briskly and around 70 on the interstate.

Here are a few of my favorite pics so far.
Going to redo the tail light tint (and do third brake/reflectors to match), I don't like the matte look i got, want nice and shiny. Quite a bit done so far but nothing big. Tinted windows and windshield strip, blacked out all chrome (cannot stand fake chrome!!!), replaced/removed all badges, took hub caps off (wheels in pic are under them), black lug nuts. A few interior things, but not much at all.

Flawedlegacy....thanks for posting those pics!!!! I was thinking those 16" wheels would look great without the hubcaps and I was right!!! So wish I'd have pushed to have them switched when I bought the car but the dealer was having nothing of it.....maybe I'll find someone local that wants to trade!

Really like your Niro. What did you use to black out all the chrome?

Bringing up an old post here, but I like the thought and haven't seen many posts on modifying Niros. I just bought mine a couple of months ago, and I will modify in a matter of time. Right now I've done halogen bulb swaps, and took the wheel covers off for the black 5 spokes underneath. My plans are to put on 18" XXR Slingshot wheels come spring, I'm going to swap projectors in the headlights, replace factory LED running lights with sequential switchback LED boards (just found a Korean manufacturer for this), and eventually I might see if anyone in the aftermarket world has a lowering kit (only a couple of inches).

As a car enthusiast, I hated hybrids, and the only reason I ended up in a Niro is because I needed out of my BMW. So I plan on owning this car and making it mine by not being like any other Niro out there!

I had to change my fog lights h8 bulb because they were so yellow compared to my HIDs I put it in some LEDs. I ordered 6000 k but I think 6500 k came in. I'm going to keep them this way they are overly bright but they match way better than before I love it.
