OH. Look, a recall. New 9/2018

So I was looking around looking for Niro info, and found this on the NHTSA site....

Electrical Resistance at Main Relay May Cause Fire

NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V666000
Manufacturer Kia Motors America
Components HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
Potential Number of Units Affected 27,030
Summary
Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Kia Niro hybrid electric vehicles. The Main Relay within the Power Relay Assembly (PRA) may have inadequate connections between its contacts, causing increased electrical resistance.

Remedy
Kia will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the Power Relay Assembly (PRA) for damage. If no damage is found, the main relay will be replaced. If damage is found, the PRA will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin November 23, 2018. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC168.

I guess it's good they are finding out stuff like this and fixing it!!

It looks like they are going to check them all, then fix the ones that are damaged, then replace the questionable part so it doesn't go bad later.

I am so happy people post this stuff so we know what to expect next time I get a service. When I called about myhandle that fell off, the guy asked me what a TSB was when I wanted to schedule a repair. Really the service department asking what a TSB is? Or anyone at a car dealership for that matter?

Your right! This forum is very useful. Hopefully the mechanics at your dealership are more informed. At least where I go the "service advisor" knew he was new and didn't know much about the Niro and let me talk directly to the mechanic. The mechanic knew all about the Niro so I felt a lot better about the service dept.

No, and I don't expect to, because it only applies to Niros manufactured between 11/2016 and 9/2017.

You can find the month and year of manufacture for your car by opening the driver's door and looking at the sticker on the door jamb.

The NHTSA web site now has more info available on this recall, including several documents from Kia. See https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2018/KIA/NIRO%2520PLUG-IN%2520HYBRID/SUV/FWD#recalls .

You can also plug your VIN into the recall lookup widget on the NHTSA web site. If you've registered with owners.kia.com, that web site also has a feature that will notify you if any recalls pertain to your car.

I bought in early Oct 2017 so pretty sure I’ll qualify.

Thanks for the links!

Received the notice Dec 3, 2018. Will make an appointment in a few days.

Overall I like the car (19, 718 miles now at 51.2MPG AVE per Fuelly account for "Our Niro" if anyone wants to check Fuelly.

I like the car but the surging, jerking (whatever you call it) is aggravating. Our car does not show extreme symptoms, but it is noticeable when I does it (sometimes more noticeable than other times). Most of the time it is not noticed. Also, seems the temperature control and radio operation is erratic (does crazy things at times - turns itself on, usually all we do is USB music and sometimes end up with radio and have a time getting back to USB -- pull the USB out and plug it back in resets it). Crazy stuff.

Considering the recalls (glad at least they do them), I restate what I always use to say, 'Don't buy a new Model anything." Ours was the first to hit the Dealers lot (bought FEB 2017 as EX Model with the Sunroof PKG) and to top it off I did not negotiate a hard as normal (got a $2000 discount - think final price was $27,999 plus taxes, etc. and decent average price for my 2010 Rogue).

Not a smart deal except I like the car (size, looks, MPG, driving it).

Yep, this is the recall that says "THE DEFECT MAY CAUSE HEAT DAMAGE TO THE REAR SEAT, INCREASING THE RISK OF A FIRE." Got the recall notice earlier this week.
