Pull codes without scan tool?

You can also stop at most any auto parts store and they'll pull the codes for free. Auto Zone or O'Reilly both offer it, and many others follow along.

A failing 12v battery can trigger random trouble codes. But you don't mention the year or model of Niro you have, so it's tough to say if it might be failing yet. IN general they seem to start failing after 2-3 years. Mine was fine when I traded it at 2 years and 3 months, but maybe I got lucky. :)

That's just the cars with a 12v lead acid battery, such as the PHEV. It's undersized, since it doesn't actually have to turn the engine to start it. The traction battery and EV motor do that instead. The 12v is simply there to run the accessories and provide power to "start" the car. And Kia didn't engineer a good method of maintaining that battery. With an ICE car, you have an alternator running with the engine that keeps the battery charged. The Niro doesn't have an alternator at all. It uses a DC-DC converter to maintain the 12v battery using the traction battery. But it's not designed to maintain the lead acid battery for long life. Couple that with the small size and you have a short life span.
