Hi, I'm at my first 1K and either I didn't notice it before or it started now. I'm hearing a rattle/knocking noise coming from the back. I didn't have a chance to sit in the back while someone is driving so I can't pinpoint the exact location yet. You can hear it at the lower speeds 20-25 on some rough road.

It doesn't sound like the metal type but more like plastic but not 100% sure.

I thought I'll ask if anybody experienced the similar issue with their Niro (before I'll be forced to take it to KIA).

Please advise and thanks in advance.

If the rear seat belt is twisted and caught in the return slot, the metal buckle will rattle against the plastic strip next to the seat.

I've had the same rattle, THOUGHT it was coming from the back, it was the front passenger seat belt, twisted and tapping the plastic side pillar next to it.

I had the exact problem. It was a faulty electric window on the passenger door. the mounting bolts were not installed correctly. Took it to the dealer and theymanager opened and closed the back door twice and said, yep can fix that. At the time I didn't even think it was the door. Took them 2 hours and no problem since.

I took my 2018 Niro PHEV to the dealer for first oil change, tire rotation and recall items. After I got the car back I noticed rattle coming from rear but too late to take it back. It's annoying but

I can't get back to dealer for awhile so just have to monitor the forum and see what others have done. I did try to plug all the seat belts in but that didn't help.

Sorry for not replying sooner.

Dealer found the issue(on the second try - first they added more padding on the battery)

It was the rear hatch - supposedly they had "similar issues" with Stinger. If the rubber is NOT aligned correctly or too tight (in my case) it can cause the rattle. After adjustment

Hi, I'm new here. Since a couple of months I have a Kia Niro 2017, European version, but I assume it's the same car as in US, assembled in Korea.
Since a couple of weeks I notice the same problem, rattle noise coming from the back, on rough roads at lower speed. I tried everything: hatch (tested with disassembled rubber), fuel inlet, seat belts, everything out of the trunk, rattle is still there..
Now I suppose it could be the top part of the rear shock absorbers. It's a plastic thing, when I move it sidewards quickly it makes an irritating sound, which is heard inside of the car.
That could be an answer why this problem occurs only on rough roads.
Unfortunately, I have no idea how to eliminate this sound...

Do you have the same issue? Can you check it in your cars??
You can access it easily, from outside of a car just above the wheel.
I mean this part:

Hi,
Did you get any further with the noisy shocker? I have recently purchased a 2019 Niro Hybrid and have noticed when I am driving with the drivers window open, I can hear a rattling noise coming from the rear on the drivers side. It is loud enough at low speed on a bumpy road to make pedestrians look up to see what the noise is. This cannot be heard inside when driving with the window closed. I have looked underneath and all I can find that moves and makes a noise is the upper plastic part of the shocker. Did you find out any more? I will mention this to the Dealer when it goes in for a service in July.

Interesting. My car has also developed at 33,000 miles a right rear metallic rattle on rough surfaces that sounds like for all the world like a loose exhaust clamp (it isn't). I am able to wiggle the plastic cover on the shock to create a rattle, but not sure it is the same sound as I'm hearing.

Yes, I also checked the exhaust, plenty of movement but no rattle. Sounds metallic, but the plastic shroud is the only thing that moves. Strange one. It's embarrassing when people turn & stare! Car has done under 2500 miles. I have not yet found out if it makes the same noise on the passenger side.

On my car, the left side plastic shock cover is more "rattlely" to the hand, but I've never heard a sound. If this is indeed the source, a fix may be relatively easy. Mind you, I've never done this kind of work on a car, but it looks like if you place a rubber ring between the cover and the spring just above, that it may give more support to the cover effectively stiffening it and stopping side to side movement. Once apart, other solutions may become evident.

Your car is presumably newer with lower miles than mine and the dealer may be more likely to address it as warranty work. July is a long way off, but please keep us informed!

Ok will do. Been booked up for 1st service for a while, but it all depends on how the dreaded Covid 19 pans out!

Hi,
I went to the dealer and checked it out on a brand new car. It also makes that noise, so this is how it's made.
So I actually got used to it. But a month ago, when I got the wheels out to change them to the summer wheels, I have placed a couple of small stripes of self adhesive window seal (waterproof) in the gap between the plastic cover and shock absorber. The rattle is (almost) gone, so this is it. Actually the noise comes from the top of the shock absorber, there is a smallest gap so there is contact. In order to do it properly you should take it all out and put some sealing right there. But if you do it on the bottom of the plastic cover, it really helps a lot.

Hi,
Thanks for the tip Kristof. I may well have a go at doing the same, but will definitely mention it to the dealer when it goes in, just to see if it is a known thing!

When you say "top" are you referring to where the shock meets the coil spring?
I mean top of the shock tube, where piston rod comes in the tube. This is probably the thickest place and there is contact place between the plastic cover and shock.
