No. The HEV has the traction battery under the rear seat. The PHEV has the battery in the back, down where traditional cars kept a spare tire, under the rear floor panel. The EV has the battery back under the passenger compartment floor, which covers the front and back seat areas.
Yeah that's what I always thought but post #37 above says it's moved to the engine compartment for 2023. That shocks me? I can't find a diagram for 2023.

OK, then what is this large aluminum block with heavy orange cables and a coolant tank? Is it the power inverter? Obviously, I'm new to HEVs, and unfamiliar with the technology.

If it's the power inverter, then this seems like a much safer location than between the front bumper and the left wheel.

Yes that should be the inverter. Looks different than my 2018 though, I'll have to look in the morning. Should be the inverter though since it has it's own cooling lines. The inverter and the ICE have two separate cooling systems hence the 2 bottles. The HV battery just gets cooled by air.

Thanks for the clarification. My first car had a 4-speed stick shift, carburetors, distributor, and a manual spark advance dial on the dashboard. Things have changed a lot.
LOL tell me about it. The only reason I know a little bit about hybrids is because I bought a Prius back in 04. It was the first new car I got that was a groundbreaking car so I studied it alot and PriusChat was like this, full of info. When I was young everybody was trying to get a few more horsepower out of their Mustangs, Camaros now old the old guys like me are trying to eek out a few more mpg's out of their hybrids lol

None of mine ever had spark advance on the dash, but several did have manual chokes. I can also remember a button on the floor to activate the starter. But Dad and I updated that old truck with 12v and key start on a larger De Soto engine. :D

I forgot about starter button on the floor!!! How about the dimmer switch on the floor. Anybody remember what year they started moving the dimmer switch to the turn signal stalk?

I swear I remember having a button on the floor to toggle the high beams on/off.. either one of my dads old trucks or maybe one of my grandfathers cars. We had a '63 Ford Falcon pickup for almost 30 years.. It might have been that one.

So the part that is holding up my 2018 Niro body repair is "86560G5310 Lower grille w/fog lamps, w/adaptive cruise w/plug-in."
Apparently this part is on a Nationwide backorder with no ETA. So no OEM part is available anywhere in the US.
As far as aftermarket parts go, the body shop says that Geico allows parts from a limited number of suppliers, and none of these have it either.
After I performed an extensive search, CARiD offered me a version of this part w/o adaptive cruise control, delivered for less than $200. This is less than the cost of 1 week's car rental.
In addition, Get All Parts suggested I look on EBay and, when I did, I found part 86560G5100 which the seller says is compatible with my Niro and priced at $568.77 and it happens to be the last one.
I shared this info with the body shop and am awaiting their response.
Any comments / ideas?

Trying to think of the cars I owned back then. I know my 1980 Rabbit diesel had the turn signal stalk switch, but that was a European design, so might be ahead of US designs. My '84 Dodge 600 had it, so early 80s at the minimum. I didn't own anything that was built between 1972 and 1980, so useless memory there. Come to think of it, I had a 1975 Dodge Colt (Japanese car) and it was on the stalk. So I'm going with mid-late '70s when the move happened.

I bet your right. I had a 1970 Duster then a 1976 Volare RoadRunner but I can't remember if they had the button on the floor or not. I loved that Roadrunner the horn went beep beep doesn't take much for me I guess.

To continue hijacking this thread… I drove a 76 280z 2+2 in high school/college. I help dad swap the 4 speed for a 5. Man what a fun car.. but I traded it for a 89 Pathfinder and drove that beast and my skis all over the country, and into the ground.

My very first car was a hand me down from my parents, their old 80 diesel Rabbit. And if course dad pulled the spare out and added a second gas tank. I swear we could drive from Albuquerque (where I grew up) to Orange County, CA to visit family, without stopping for fuel. He added a hitch to trailer the spare and a little cargo box. I was miserable. My kid brother would sleep on the hatchback, trunk lid area. Ohhhh, the 80’s… what a wonderful time to come of age. 😊

Glad your ok, that's the most important thing. I hope your dealing with the other persons insurance company and not your own since he caused the accident. If you deal with your company it will show up as a "claim" on your records even though your company will subrogate it to their insurance. What ever don't let emotion cloud your judgement. From the pics it looks like maybe your gonna have rear suspension damage and maybe ever structural damage. Hopefully they will total it and you can get a new car. If your friendly with a Kia dealer maybe they can help you making sure your get the correct number for your car. Don't wait for the insurance company bug the **** out of them for action. They should be paying for a rental (your might be still making payments on your car that your denied use of due to the other guys negligence, you need to go to work and to the doctor to get checked out, keep mentioning that). If it gets fixed make sure your the one that can choose a body shop. Make sure you get a good one. Good luck.
I was rear ended while sitting at a red light last week. A JEEP Grand Cherokee slammed into the back corner of the passenger side, making it undriveable (hit by an older gentleman who “didn’t see us”). Luckily I have dashcams for the front and back, so it captured everything and the guy admitted he was at fault and was very polite about it.
Insurance still hasn’t gotten back as to whether they’re going to repair or total it, so I thought I could maybe get some opinions here to prep myself. Hurt my heart taking pictures and seeing it get towed away, I spent the first two years of my first real 9-5 job paying it off, named it, vacuumed it every month, washed it regularly…I really really hope it’s repairable! (pushed all the way into the next lane! Good thing there weren’t any other cars there)
Small update 10MAR2023: as of now it’s been 2 1/2 weeks since I was rear ended. It took the insurance until Monday, almost 2 weeks, to get it from the tow yard! It’s currently at a nearby Norm Reeves where they drew up an estimate of record that they submitted to Kia and the adjuster. I asked for a copy and in all, their estimate total is just over $15k with no ETA on one of the parts, followed by an estimated 4-6 week repair time after all of the parts are received. All the adjuster will tell me is that my rental has been extended to next Friday 😔

Well at least that's a little progress. I would keep after the claims person assigned to your case. I don't think the adjuster has the power to total your car. A rental for 6 weeks will really add up quick and if they don't provide one to you that would be the final straw for me to get a lawyer. Somehow make sure they know that.

To follow up on my post #14 above where I was rear ended in the driver's rear corner in a hit & run, the total cost to repair it in Sept 2019 was $1,500. This was less than I was expecting so I was happy with the result.
Now I have a new situation. On the night of March 4, I merged on the local I-81; traffic was heavy and I was stuck in the right lane behind a semi tractor-trailer when it started to swerve. Next thing was a truck tire tread appeared in my headlights from under it and I had no choice but to go over it. Next I could see a line of cars pulled over on the shoulder that had already gone over it, sustained damage, and drivers shining flashlights under their cars. I had no warning lights on the dash and so I continued the short drive home. Next morning I went to a local tire shop to have the damage assessed. They found the lower bumper torn off along with everything else that was covering the undercarriage incl mudflaps; bent front radiator, AC condensor, lower rad support, air dam, coresupport, grill damage. They said my Niro was compromised but driveable and to report it to my insurance asap.
I contacted Geico and they had me submit pictures of the car from specified angles online. From what they could see, they estimated the damage at $950. After a week, the same body shop as above upped that estimate to $3,500. Now it's been in the shop 2-1/2 weeks and all parts are in except the front bumper/grill, which is on back order with no confirmed date of delivery. They are now scrambling to find it in the after-market. This same body shop used to have loaner cars, but since Covid they stopped doing that and I'm stuck with a rental car with the costs adding up. Their service used to be good and prompt; now it seems those who used to work there are gone and it's different. To add insult to injury, Geico just upped my 6-month premium by 20%. When I inquired why; they said the accidents in my area have gone up and the increase is on everyone to cover their costs.

Didn’t the police determine who owned the tire? Hopefully some of the others identified the owner who I’d expect is culpable for damages. it sounds liken you were close to home when this happened which is better than 100s of miles away. The local police should help you mitigate your damage costs.

Also perhaps the cops have access to traffic cameras up ahead of the incident to see if the offending truck pulled over or other evidence of the offending truck?

Have you seen the quality of most traffic cameras? I'd be surprised if the could determine the color of the truck, let alone ID the owner.

Conclusion:
In the end, they have decided to total it and originally offered me $23.6k before I asked them to redo the valuation for an LX instead of an FE. New valuation is $24.3 and then additional for sales tax and fees. Which is pretty much what I had paid in 2018. Now it’s just a whole bunch paperwork and tackling getting a prorated refund for my extended warranty. And getting a new car.

I dropped off the extra key fob and got to sit inside one last time to grab things before releasing to them. All warm from the sunshine and I ended up crying again because from the front she was still perfect. Good-bye Kiki, you were the best 😭

Glad it was a favorable outcome for you. I think in the long run it will be the best for you. Timing might just be on your side. I think things are just starting to free up with availability and some dealers are just starting to go back to dealing just a little.
