What is Mood Lighting?

12922 Views 26 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Luis2007
I have an 2018 EX with Advanced Tech Package. On the Kia website, in the list of interior features, there is a line for “Mood Lighting” with the description:

The mood lamps offer a distinctive and progressive feel to the interior by casting a subtle but dramatic red tint.
What is this?

No one knows what this feature is? It shows as standard on all trim levels. I hope it’s not just the fact that the controls have a red backlighting.

I have no idea. It means there's an ambient red light in the cabin, but I don't know where the light comes from or how bright it is or whether it can be controlled. If my car has ambient red light I've never noticed it, I'll take a look tonight
It only comes on when you put Barry White music on through the built in media system. Didn't your Niro have the 'sex it up' menu option under setup?? <joke>

I'm really wondering what this is. Dealership had no idea, can't find it in the manual. Nobody has a real answer?
They are probably using the term to cover things like the light inside the door armrest, and other indirect lighting sources. It usually refers to lights ringing the cupholders, or other low level lights like that. However, I haven't seen any lighting along my console. To be honest, I do to work so early in the morning having a light around the cupholder would be welcome. :)
This is a guess not a definitive answer.
On our 2019 PHEV Niro in the evening when the lights are turned on in the Niro our gauges and instrument panel lighting has a red tint.
Could this possibly be what they are referring to?

5 stars to Roadkill401 on the Barry White reference from someone who is old enough to know who he is referring to.
I've gone into every menu and setting I can think of and can't find a thing.

You want mood lighting? Factory installed on the Kia Soul. Lots of third party options though.

Mood lighting is changeable colored accents on the doors and below the dash typically. Can be anywhere third party, even underbody to look cool to other drivers and pedestrians (may be illegal in many states).
It's not that I want it, I'm just curious what it is as far as the Niro is concerned since it's been listed as a feature since it debuted but nobody actually knows what it is or how to use it.

I know what it is and how it is used, but the Niro HEV/PHEV doesn't have it. There are many errors in the manual from boilerplate language that doesn't apply to our model to features that they may have been considered in some markets, or that may actually be available in some markets.
This is from the website features list and was also listed on the window sticker. Not in the manual at all from what I could find.

Is mood lighting dependent on age?

Could audio and gauge back lighting be considered mood lighting for a guy with a couple of kids, wife and a start on male pattern baldness who is taking the family out to eat at White Castle?

Just kidding. And not poking fun at anyone but myself- I meet all of the above criteria.
2019 niro here and there is nothing such as mood lighting...just standard backlight on the console for me but maybe Johnxyz is right and they consider this as moodlight... I did not put barry white on though :D (I'm more of a mike oldfield moodlight shadow person :D )
I suspect it is a leftover from an old cut&paste from another model's documentation.

In doubt... better to many lines than too few :)
Asked Kia on Facebook. It's literally just the red glow on the buttons/switches/ports when the headlights are on. Would be cooler if the screens also had a red theme, otherwise it's just the color that the buttons are vs mood lighting.

Wow. Talk about overselling a standard feature. All cars have lit controls when it’s dark.

Thanks for investigating.

Yeah, that's just standard control backlighting. Sheesh!
If lighting is to be mood lighting it requires a change of color. Accent lights do not require a change of color. Backlights for buttons are not mood lighting. I think the FB poster is just wrong. Just like the manual often is.
