2018 Kia Niro LX apple carplay and update problems

My Apple CarPlay stopped working suddenly (well, actually it's been giving me fits for several months, but now it's completely stopped working.) I have shut off the car, reset the car to factory settings several times, I have updated my IOS and restarted my phone. My phone will charge when plugged into the USB port, and the Bluetooth connection is working. But I DEPEND on Apple CarPlay for navigation. So this is a huge issue.

Google searches suggested that perhaps my Kia's firmware is out of date. I haven't updated it since it was purchased, so that is a likely possibility. Currently my car's system says :
SW Ver. DEHEV.USA.SOP.V085.170526
Firmware Ver. DE.USA.258.170516.MICOM.D

The Kia Navigation Updater software says that I will need an SD card, however, my car doesn't have an SD slot, it just has a USB port. So I did purchase a brand new 2.0 USB 32 GB flash drive and made sure to format it to FAT32. I'm currently downloading the update that the Navigator recommended Kia ... Niro 2017-2018 update for the THIRD time.

I go into my car, start it up, and insert the USB drive. I then go to the settings, to the SW info page where you can see the "update" button. But, my car begins to play sound files that are apparently located on the flash drive but when I press the update button it tells me that I need to insert the memory where the update files are located. So, I am at a loss as to how to update my car and how to get my Apple CarPlay to start working again. I have used multiple different USB to C cords and the car will charge my phone but Apple CarPlay just won't initiate.
I've got an Iphone 15 Pro Max, and under the CarPlay setting I thought maybe if I told it to forget my Kia I could reconnect it. But now, CarPlay is circling and it's not finding the car even though my phone is connected via BlueTooth. So if anyone can help, I'd GREATLY appreciate it. The CarPlay setting is selected in the KIA settings.

I have the same year and model as yours. I use apple car play too and it works fine but I have never updated anything with Kia since it was new. I just plug my phone into the car with the wire to the usb port and after it says Bluetooth ect. are disconnected I just hit the car play button on the screen and it works. Maybe your fooling around with the car's stuff too much and should just set it back to when it was new????

Still working fine with my 2018. Most likely source of your issue is impacted lint in your port. It can be quite difficult to see, and difficult to remove (I initially discovered the problem via an Apple Store genius) - a dental pick works best (doesn't bend) but can be done with an open paper clip. I have to do it every year or so.

The other possible issue is your tethering cord. I'm not sure about USB-C connections if you have a new iPhone, but Lightning, at least the third party cables, can get wonky after several years. That's the point I'm at today in my car seven years later, sometimes it also does not connect to data (although charging is initiated) and sometimes several reconnections is required to get the data connection. I've extra new cables but have just been too lazy to try them out.

Also remotely possible is that the Niro is confused if you have used more than one phone with it. If so, go into settings and remove any phones you no longer use. Unlikely, but only takes a few seconds to clean the settings out. I had to do that once after replacing a phone. I'm not sure why as I read here about a lot of couples whose phones work no matter who is plugged in.
