PHEV and paddle shifters in sports mode

2020 PHEV owner. I used sport mode a fair amount on my last trip to the country. I usually upshift as soon as go into sport mode and downshift on hills as needed. Unlike my Genisis, the Niro doesn't seem to go into automatic shifting if you don't use the paddles for a short time. I had it stay in 5th gear at a stop sign. Is there a trick to this getting the transmission back into Auto? I've been moving back into HEV mode as I approach stops.

My '19 doesn't have paddle shifters, so no experience there. I have seen that if I'm in sport mode and never touch the shifter (don't manually shift gears) it will still shift like an auto, just at higher revs. If I use the shifter just once, then it appears to enter a manual mode and the only way to get back to the auto mode is to shift out of sport and back in again. Sounds like yours is operating about the same.
