I'm having this exact same problem which is why I'm here today looking for it to see if others are having it. Only noticed recently with cold weather. Come to a complete stop at a light, wait a little bit, then push gently on accelerator and this big jerk that scares the s*** out of me. It's such a large jerk it's similar to being rear-ended or something. It's like an engine or transmission seize. I have a 2020 Niro for less than 1 year now. I live in Concord, CA, which is flat terrain, no hills. Same as original poster, it doesn't happen 100%, so it would be difficult to reproduce for the dealership.

I just bought a Niro PHEV two weeks ago and after driving it for a couple of days i started getting a loud jerk when starting from a full stop. At first it started happened in EV mode only but I've had it happen in Hybrid mode a couple of times ( not sure if the engine is actually working or just on for Heating). The sound and jerk can best be described as what happens when you drive a stick shift and you pull the clutch too quickly in first gear without any gas and the car jerks forward.

The challenge here is that is happens RANDOMLY and is impossible to replicate accurately. It's happened in 'cold' weather early morning ( 40 degrees F) when the car has been running for a while, when I back up and then switch to drive. The dealership is giving me the run around since they haven't been able to replicate the problem when they drive it so they refuse to take the car in and open a ticket. I have a video where you can clearly hear the loud noise and se the 'jerk' but can;t attach it here. If anybody else has seen this problem please advise. The dealer says they checked the worldwide Kia database and haven't found any similar problem ( therefore refuse to work on it). They drove it around with the sensors and 'testing kit' and say all the reading are fine. I believe the car is unsafe to drive but apparently the dealer doesn't agree.

The car has less than 500 miles on it so this is clearly a factory defect. I have escalated the issue to customer service and I'm waiting to hear what they come back with.

Please let me know if anyone has had a similar problem, the more information i have the quicker they can get to the bottom of this!!

thanks.
Hello.
I have exactly the same problem. I even have the TSB 093 (as posted on this Forum. Thanks!). But before I had that info, i thought i was the only one with this "lemon". I had taken it in to the dealer and received the same runaround. Now, even though I am "armed" with this TSB, no matter which kia dealership service dept I call, they have to "start from scratch" to determine the issue. What that tells me this other Kia service dept is going to to same thing. They will take it for a drive, and of course, since it is SO RANDOM, they will find nothing wrong. It seems to be a vicious circle. I'm going to contact the Kia headquarters "Help Center' and see if they can or will help me with it. I tell ya right now, though. With this run around from the company not backing up their product when you HAVE THE TSB FOR THEM TO SEE! I will not be buying a k
Kia in the future. How is it you spend 40K on a car and they won't back it up?!

This has been the worst experience ever. Talked to Kia of Portland and I'm getting the same response as usual "we don't know what the problem is". They told me the action they have taken is "emailing with engineering" (whatever that means). The dealer keeps blaming Kia motors and Kia motors keeps blaming the dealer.
greeaaat!

So thanks to this forum and EVERYBODY'S posts and hard work, I took the posted TSB to the dealer and told him i'm returning with the same issue, but this time i have THIS. I handed it him and i said, I know you have to do your mandatory test drive, but I'm telling you, it will probably not do it. I'm going on a road trip and I don't want to worry about this more than I already am. He took the printed out TSB and said he had to look it up, but that he'll do it anyway. WHAAAT?! This is all thanks to you. Very relieved, lol for the moment. Wish i had more faith in the car. it will have to earn it, ha ha. Thanks to you all!

Hi,

I have the same problem and also getting the runaround from the dealer, I also managed to make a video which gives the pound bang. Feels like you are getting rear ended. Did you get any resolution?
Thanks

Alarming and sad to see this problem resurfacing from time to time. For those of you who have had this problem, please post your car's mileage and build date (this can be found on inside of the door frame of driver's door above the tire pressure tag. It will have a date like this "2/19".). Thanks!

My mileage is currently at 36k, started at 7k and build date 09/19

Just found this thread. We just started having this problem a week ago. Mileage is currently 33k and build date is 07/19. PHEV. Super disappointing. I'll call the dealer this week with the TSB and see what they say.

I have had exaktly the same symptom and I had to leave the car four times to the local KIA-dealer/servicecenter here in Ă–rebro, Sweden, to let them find the problem. This last time they could not at first replicate the jerk but when they did, as instructed in serviceinstruction, changed oil in the gearbox (again, they have done this once before), they could make the gearbox jerk and now they offer me a complete new gearbox!

I am so happy I had almost given up!

Unbelievable that this is going on for years now. My '22 EV sometimes has a clunking sound and slight jerk when something in the rear wheel(s) releases, beginning to move from an overnight stop. Nothing like what you've all described, but of minor concern. Will be following this thread. Good luck to all!

The EV drivetrain is completely different from the PHEV, so no it's not in any way related. What you are describing is likely just the parking brake releasing. Sometimes they simply take a "set" while parked, and the release is a bit abrupt. From your description I'd label it a non-issue, but without actually hearing/feeling it I'm just making an educated guess.

@atc98092 I agree with you that my EV thing is at non-issue at this point.

Edit 11/2022 just revisiting this. I'm now sure it was just the parking brake releasing. Now that the car has lots more miles on it, this does NOT happen. Go figure.

I have a 2020 HEV and have had this issue. I took the car to the dealership twice, and they kept the car for a few days to have a long test drive, and couldn't replicate the issue. I then got very lucky, and was able to show the service manager all the dashcam clips I had saved whenever the clunk happened. Then they performed the fix mentioned in TSB 093. So far, so good.

How's everyone else's experience after getting the oil replaced? It completely disappeared? Got less frequent? Or nothing changed?

I'd also like thank the Canadian user who mentioned the TSB in the first place. Made me realize this is a real issue and not just the DCT being not very graceful as usual.

OK - see my above posts # 310 & 312. '22 Niro EV EX. The following incident doesn't seem to be related in the least, but might be related to what others have reported in this thread, even though mine is a BEV. Anyway, here goes:

Today I started driving after the car was parked for about 3 hours, with about 35 miles of use, starting with a fully-charged battery. I drove about 2 feet and experienced what seemed like a LOUD - Double - BANG! Clear, dry all day, 70 degrees F outside.

It felt like I was perhaps driving over something or something got caught in a gear. The car most certainly jerked twice, and hard! I wasn't going over 3 mph.

I immediately stopped the car, got out and looked around and underneath. Nothing but flat asphalt. No debris, glass, plastic, etc. No liquid, nothing leaking. Restarted the car, drove 10 feed forward, stopped again, got out and looked around back to where I was. Nothing. Nada. All I saw at the car's original location was flat asphalt.

Drove the car another 50+ miles with no further incident, and left it charging overnight.

The only things I can deduce are: either something in the works got jammed (the parking brake?) and let loose when I moved, or some small animal left an acorn or something somewhere. I kinda doubt the animal story but I have no other explanations to offer. No errors or warnings on the dashboard.

You will bet I'll be back here if this happens again. Tomorrow's a new day.

Edit 11/2022 - already mentioned this in another edit. Most likely sticky parking brake releasing. No longer happens.

P.S.
But now they say that it is imposible to find a gearbox in Europe, due to the pandemic or transport problems or the war in Ukraine...

Oh thank God...LOL..they have been very good with me as well. They told me my car will probably have to come back and so far I have had 1 jerk so far but at least it was a mild one. I want to wait and see if it happens again because he told me I will loose my car for a week probably and will need a curtesy car setup.
Hello Doug did your issue ever got resolved? How did they end up fixing it? I will be taking mine to the North Shore hopefully they can fix mine.

Finally got the issue resolved on my 2019 Niro Phev. TSB TRA05202001 was performed. I have the service notes if anyone is interested. Got it fixed at Kia West Coquitlam, BC, Canada

I am having this issue too. Any suggestions?
I was having the same problem as well. I had a hard time proving the fault to Kia dealership, but this morning they determined that the issue was due to the dual clutch system. Let's see if they can fix it... I'm very happy with my car, but Kia should now accept this chronic issue and not cause us this pain. Meanwhile, the San Jose Capitol Kia service was able to detect the error. What was a suffer that!
