Check Hybrid System HEV + Shut off engine! Warning

2019 HEV 40K miles, right after I changed the oil (0W-20, full synthetic, just like the other 2 times) and this alarm pops up right when I start up. I tried to go around the block to see if it might clear, and that's when the Shut Engine Off! warning came up, and driving was rough. There are no OBDII codes stored, and from what I gather from this forum it could be one of a thousand causes, none of which I can trace down without a Kia tech. The check engine light AND the HEV warning are illuminated. Any ideas before I arrange a week or more without a vehicle?

Sorry this was going on for you, Im facing a very similar issue with my 2017 HEV. High voltage Fuse was replaced but still the same issue. Basically comes up with the same warning then shuts the HEV system off while the cars moving and has this nasty rough idle. Haven't figured out a solution yet besides wiping the codes but I'm sure its a larger issue. Have you found a solution for yours?

My 2019 Niro Hybrid went into dealership 2/27/24 for recall . The next day, stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on a grade, hybrid system warning lights came on. I took it to dealer and they still haven't figured out what is wrong. I have had issues previously going up a steep grade on my way to SF. They have never been able to address this problem because they couldn't duplicate it. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Same thing happened to me as I was driving from South Jersey into Manhattan. HEV and ENGINE lights popped on toward the end of the NJ Turnpike, then the car chugged through the Lincoln Tunnel (thank God it didn't die INSIDE the tunnel), and conked out completely right in front of our hotel. It was towed to a midtown garage, who couldn't diagnose the issue, then retowed to a Kia dealership in Jamaica, Queens, who were equally unable to diagnose the issue ("we've run every test we can, and can't do anything else." I got the same hail mary effort of replacing some high voltage fuse, and promises that it would all be covered by the HCA recall (I already dropped over $700 last summer to repair a DIFFERENT HCA problem (how many faulty HCAs does this car have?!)), and the power train warrantee (it's a 2017 with about 34,000 miles on it, and now, a month later, I STILL don't have my car (I paid for a rental to drive back from NYC) and the various garages are trying to bill me close to a thousand bucks, and Kia Customer Service (get me started on THEM) waited 3 weeks to even begin the review process that took me right back to friggin' square one. I told them I don't want this lemon back, as it's already tried to kill me twice, and clearly isn't safe, to just mail me back the full contents of what's inside and shove it sideways up their tiniest orifice, and to give me a new car, or I'll sue them over Breach of Implied Warrantee of Habitability, but they just sent an email asking me-- AGAIN -- for proof of ownership and every service record, receipt and other busy work nonsense, all of which is available to them online, so that they can "begin the review process" of my claim ... that I opened on Valentine's Day. I just wanted to see how many other Kia owners were having the same issue. Looks like I'm not alone. Class action suit, anyone? Post your thoughts below.

Thanks to other people who posted here, It happened to me as well.
The Hybrid turned off, MAL light came on.

On Apr12, 2024 we were driving north in our 2019 Kia Niro PHEV to a weekend getaway off a rural dirt road, so didn't want the car to be unreliable .
On starting I activated HEV mode to preserve the EV for the slower rural roads, and drove about 70miles north.
We took a short break by the lake N of Ukiah.
Then while driving out of Ukiah heading North on Hwy 101 up the “Willits Grade” with road work, the console indicated a MAL and the engine on the Hybrid system turned off. The EV system continued, though it felt at reduced power.

The road was divided highway, up a mountain side, single lane with road cones defining one lane on a two-lane road, with road work in the other direction.

I pulled over safely through some roadwork traffic cones to the side of the road, and when stationary turned everything off, as if to leave the vehicle.

After a minute I turned the ignition back on, and then pulled out safely through the cones and accelerated to 60mph. The MAL indicator light came on again. I asked my passenger to take a picture of the MAL,– showing speed 60mph, and 20 miles on the EV range.

On EV power, I found a safe road side place to pull over for a 2nd time. After a minute with everything off, turned on and started heading north uphill again.

The MAL happened a third time, and after that I saw a larger road pull off on the side of the hill and pulled in through traffic cones, and stopped. There was about 11 miles left on the EV.

Cell signal was good, we were about halfway between the towns of Ukiah and Willits and we called around and tried to find out what we should do. The only advice from Kia Roadside Assistance service was for a tow to the nearest Kia Dealer – 80 miles South in Santa Rosa, which would be billed at about $880.

After about 15minutes contemplating what to do, and probably had the engine shutoff for over an hour, decided to see if we could try again, drive uphill, find a turn-around and then see if we could make it back to Ukiah Enterprise Rent a car.

We found the end of the divided highway a short time later and were able to turnaround, and go downhill to Ukiah Enterprise. The Hybrid System remained engaged.
We rented another car for the weekend.
At the end picked up our car and drove it back to the dealer without any further issues.

The dealer diagnosis was "Found the down stream O/2 is lazy and not responding. Replace downstream O/2 sensor"

The car only has less than 27,000 miles on it, and it is covered under the 10yr Hybrid warranty. Still applying for a refund on the rental car.

Don't hold your breath waiting for that rental car refund. They will refuse you. They refuse everything. You have to be persistent -- like full time job persistent -- then threaten litigation -- to get them to do even the bare minimum. And you will devote a huge portion of your life just to get that bare minimum. Buenos suertes, amigo!
