Hi, Zack. Did you ever figure out how to update your software version? My 2017 Kia Niro EX is having same issue you reported (software in my care is still the original 2016). Also, only evident option I have is to use the USB port, as there is no SD Card visible/accessible on the front of my head unit (ie, there's no little card slot flip-up flap). However, my car reports it has 3144KB of memory somewhere. Could there be an SD card somewhere hidden within the dash/trim that I'm not seeing?
Thanks - Scott
Some cars have an SD card, some use a USB stick to update. Mine had the SD card, which was behind a piece of pop-off trim directly below the radio. If your car has the SD card, you can't update via USB. It's one or the other.

The latest update required a 32gb SD card - the original one in my 2017 was 16gb. I had the same issues until I replaced it. Also, you cannot upgrade from the USB, you need to copy the software directly onto the SD card, I did this on my laptop.

I'm a little confused... you have not been able to do the update, so what is very slow?, I believe you have some other issue, either corrupted files, or a bad flash drive, or not following the update procedure.

Getting new files won't change your problem, unless you have corrupted files, and I offered to get them to you.

Up to you, you may just experience the same failure in March.

I've updated my car twice since new, no issues once I got the right files.

Update on getting the update program:

The problem is that right now, you can only download the version that is Korean region only....

So a bit of a revelation, when you try to get the updating software from the update.kia site, it downloads the program: smartupdaterplus.exe .... this is not really the program you really want... but it is where you have to start.

when you install smartupdaterplus, it actually downloads and installs the REAL updater program, which is called NavigationUpdater.exe

Whenever you run smartupdaterplus, it always checks for updates, and as several have found, you are slammed into Korean only.

Luckily, I archived the real updater program, NavigationUpdater.exe, which can be installed separately.

I have version 1.0.32, and just ran it, and it has South Korea, Canada, and USA still and I just downloaded the update files again successfully.

It has the files for 2017-2020 Niro, 2018-2020 Niro Plug in hybrid, and the 2019 & 2020 Niro EV.

So, for those of you who want to try it, you can email me for the program, I'm taking the link off my site, too many people complaining that I don't give good enough directions, and I really am not in the business of support, I'll give it to people who can handle it.

Greg

@MirZim it is very dangerous to post your personal email in a public forum. I removed yours from your post. I recommend sending a private message to Greg. Just put your mouse over his name, and a box appears with a button labeled Message.

Hello, Please can you help me with updating the firmware 2017 Kia Niro EX US version. I have my car to Europe and I need to change the distance from ml to km, but US firmware doesn't have this in settings. Is it possible to update to EU version?

While I can't be certain, I don't believe the version of firmware an owner can install can change regions. I believe it can only install over a matching version of the region. It might be something only a licensed dealer can do.

That said, I could change my display from US to Metric for speed and distance. I don't believe that would change the radio for channel spacing, as I know Europe uses different frequency spacing on both AM and FM broadcast bands.

For the radio, I don't have a problem. It can be changed from engineering mode.

I want to change my display from US to Metric for speed and distance.

That's not done from the infotainment screen. That is changed on the display in front of the driver using the steering wheel buttons.

Different countries have different versions of the firmware. I also admit that I haven't had my Niro for 9 months now, so I might have forgotten where the setting was on my US model.

I noticed some times the download is painfully slow, but at night it was a lot faster... lucky you with the SD card, I'm sure it will update for you.... the USB is not working.... did you notice the reminders about using a FAT32 SD card, and not a huge one, like 32 gigs is what I read in several places.

Greg
I did see somewhere that you have to use a 32gig card/usb. My issue is the update file is almost 40 gigs.. How am I supposed to make that work..

Bump..it's May of 2023 and I am trying to update my NAV for my 2021 Nero EV. Everytime I hit the OK button it says "Navigation downloads are temporarily unavailable." Anyone else having this issue?
Thanks
Mike
PS: Looked high and low for the 2021 Nero Electric with no success so I assumed 2020 would work?! What's up with no 2021?

I had the same experience a couple days ago. I am hoping to update my 2020 PHEV. The nav is horribly outdated.
